How2: QR Code Tattoo Guide

That nice Polynesian Tribal Manta Ray tattoo you had inked last year may not have the same appeal this year.  Perhaps you want to just share a message on your tattoo – but cute messages often lose their appeal in a few months or less..

This is why we often get the question – “Can I use Dynotag SuperIDs QR Codes for a tattoo?”

Unlike an ordinary QR code, a dynotag can update  its contents  – on demand!.

That Manta Ray can become a Sea Turtle, with porpoise flippers and fish back legs.  Or a scorpion.  Or an angel.  Whatever you want that day… The point of having a  SuperIDs QR Code tattoo is the flexibility to show ANYTHING you want in that tattoo – albeit virtually..  Even this document you are reading can be – and is in a SuperIDs QR code!

You can either scan the QR code with your phone – or view it online by visiting its web address at SuperIDs.com/1054-2676  or us its neat alias name, SuperIDs.com/a/Tattoo.

But the question stands:  can it be done?  Will it work?

The answer is – well, it depends…  On how you implement the idea…

SuperIDs come with lifetime subscription included.   The challenge is with the tattoo itself!   When QR codes were developed, they were designed to be applied on solid surfaces where there would be no stretching or fade of the image over time.

Unfortunately, for us humans, our skin is anything but solid.  When we gain or lose weight, age, or simply develop a rash – that will make the QR code inoperable.  QR readers scan the image but they will be unable to decode it successfully.  A solution is inking the short web address we use in the code – like dt1.co/1542676 But that has to be entered manually by the viewer – which is not as convenient.

This does not mean it is impossible to get a QR code tattoo. You just have to be careful where it is applied and take good care of it.  Avoid direct Sun exposure that would speed up the fading of the inks.

Upper arm may be a safer choiceThe lateral side of the bicep works better

What will work best is trying first with a temporary tattoo you can get from a place like  inkBox.com – where you can upload a QR code and get a temporary tattoo kit in the mail.

Simply go to dynotag.com/store and get any of the property tags – like this economical one.  Dynotag SuperIDs software lets you view/download the QR code for any SmartTag in your account: click the tag  ID in “My Tags” then pick “QR Code” from the menu.  You can now click on the QR code and save the image as a  .png file – which you can then upload to inkBox.com tattoo designer.

Temporary tattoos last 1-2 weeks, which should let you get a good idea about the concept before thinking about a more permanent application…
