My Bag Is Lost! — What to do right now

Lost, misplaced, or left behind — if your Dynotag is still attached, you’ve already got a way back. Here’s how to give it the best shot, and what to expect next.

How your bag’s Dynotag helps

A reminder, because it changes how you’ll use the steps below.

Your tag is a Smart ID, not a live GPS tracker. It has no battery and no electronics — that’s why it’s tough, waterproof, and never needs charging. On its own it can’t broadcast a location. Instead, the instant someone scans or opens your tag, the Dynotag Cloud Service records the location of their device and tells you right away.

In other words, your tag won’t show you a moving dot on a map. It works the moment an honest finder picks up your bag and looks at the tag — handing them your return instructions and handing you their location. Think of it as a tireless messenger, waiting for the one moment that matters.

✅ Do these 4 things now

  1. Sign in and preview your tag. Open your record and hit Preview to see exactly what a finder sees — confirm your contact details and any return instructions are right.
  2. Make sure notifications are on. In your record’s settings, confirm “Receive notification on view” and “Ask for location” are checked.
  3. Make sure a finder can actually reach you. A good Samaritan can’t return your bag if your contact info is locked. Set at least your phone or a short return message to Public (Green) so it shows the instant your tag is scanned — keep anything sensitive Password Protected (Yellow). See our Access Controls guide for how the privacy levels work.
  4. Consider posting a reward. Add your own reward on top of Dynotag’s built-in Good Samaritan Rewards to encourage a quick return.

Press “Save” after any change so your new settings take effect.

⚠️ Important: don’t be fooled by your own views

As you search, it’s tempting to keep opening your tag from your phone to “see where it is.” But the tag has no GPS of its own — so every time you view it, the Dynotag Cloud Service logs your phone’s location, not your bag’s, and emails you a “tag viewed” notification.

If you don’t realize this, it’s easy to mistake your own check-ins for a finder’s view — and think your bag is right where you happen to be standing.

How to tell them apart: open your Access Log and ignore the entries that match where you’ve been. A real finder’s view shows up as a location you don’t recognize — that’s the one to act on.

🔎 Verify it’s working

Use the “Preview” action from your My Records page (or sign out and open dynotag.com/xxxxx in a browser) to see your tag exactly as a finder would. You should see your info display correctly — confirming everything’s live. (This test will log your location, so note it in your Access Log and ignore it afterward.)

📍 Watching for activity

Every view of your tag is recorded in its Access Log — a map plus a timeline of each view with time and location (when shared). When a view notification lands from a place you don’t recognize, that’s your signal to respond.

💡 Beyond the tag

A few non-tag steps that pair well with Dynotag:

  • Retrace your route and contact the last places you visited (transit, hotel, café, rideshare).
  • File a lost-item report with the airline, transit authority, or venue — and give them your tag’s web address so anyone who finds it can verify ownership.
  • If it’s checked luggage, follow the carrier’s lost-baggage claim process in parallel.

Here’s to a quick reunion with your belongings.
